Mandate
To rethink the usage scenario and define the new design of a mobile and versatile snow removal system used on the roofs of heavy vehicle trailers.
Objectives
With nearly 30 years of experience in snow removal of residential and commercial building roofs, our client has gradually moved to fleets of heavy vehicle trailers. This specialized work requires a specific, safe, and adaptable equipment for all types of trailers. A need for which no product existed. Starting from our client test prototype not adapted to mass production and a bit heavy, our mission was first to analyze the work environment and develop the safest usage scenario for the workers. Second, to design a versatile, lasting, light, and affordable product that would meet the applicable Canadian safety standards.

Approach
We first tested the prototype and the current usage scenario and defined with the client the best way to meet their needs. We undertook a rigorous study of the strict standards regarding the safety of workers at heights and performed simulations of improved usage, based on our observations and precise ergonomic data.
The result was a complete user cycle illustrating the installation, operation, and system storage. The concept development phase led us to propose a robust, high-performance, low-cost product. We emphasized the use of aluminum for its lightness and with parts made of ultra-high-density polyethylene, a material known for its very low friction coefficient, and its abrasion and impact resistance at very low temperatures.
Results
Gold winner of the 14th edition of Grands Prix du Design, this durable and safe product demonstrates the impact that industrial design can have on your company's business. Going from an interesting idea for internal needs to a commercialised, more functional, and desirable product is the accomplished mission on this smart product. The team at Brio Innovation is proud to have been able to support VanGripper in their venture.
